About Guilford

Guilford Baptist Church was founded in 1857 as Lebanon Grove Baptist Church. The church’s name was changed in 1873 to reflect the name of the surrounding community. For 85 years Guilford served as a circuit church, sharing a minister with Calvary Baptist Church and Mount Hope Baptist Church.

The church was closed periodically in the 1940’s and 1950’s but has remained open since 1954. The church has had periods of growth and health and also several periods of decline since that time. Many faithful pastors and members helped to build up the congregation and keep it faithful to God’s word.

By the early 2000’s, however, the church had dwindled to just a few faithful members left without a pastor. In June of 2005 a church planting group from Capitol Hill Baptist Church, led by our current pastor Mike McKinley, joined the congregation. Since that time, the Lord has blessed our fellowship with a renewed vitality and ministry. God has steadily grown our congregation and in March 2009 Guilford Baptist Church began meeting at Sterling Middle School for Sunday morning services. God’s faithfulness to us has enabled us to launch two Spanish ministries—one in Sterling and one in Herndon. And in January 2010 we officially opened a food pantry.

Guilford Baptist Church is in friendly cooperation with the Southern Baptist Convention.
