About Guilford Baptist Church

Guilford Baptist Church was founded in 1857 as Lebanon Grove Baptist Church. The church’s name was changed in 1873 to reflect the name of the surrounding community. For 85 years Guilford served as a circuit church, sharing a minister with Calvary Baptist Church and Mount Hope Baptist Church.

The church was closed periodically in the 1940’s and 1950’s but has remained open since 1954. The church has had periods of growth and health and also several periods of decline since that time. Many faithful pastors and members helped to build up the congregation and keep it faithful to God’s word.

By the early 2000’s, however, the church had dwindled to just a few faithful members left without a pastor. In June of 2005 a church planting group from Capitol Hill Baptist Church, led by our current pastor Mike McKinley, joined the congregation. Since that time, the Lord has blessed our fellowship with a renewed vitality and ministry. God has steadily grown our congregation and in March 2009 Guilford Baptist Church began meeting at Sterling Middle School for Sunday morning services. God’s faithfulness to us has enabled us to launch two Spanish ministries—one in Sterling and one in Herndon. And in January 2010 we officially opened a food pantry.

Guilford Baptist Church is in friendly cooperation with the Southern Baptist Convention.

Our pastor, Mike McKinley, was raised in suburban Philadelphia. He received a B.A. in Religion and Classics from The George Washington University in Washington, DC, and an M.Div from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

In 2004, Mike was brought onto the pastoral staff at Capitol Hill Baptist Church as a church planter. In 2005, he brought a small group of people from CHBC to Guilford in order to help revitalize the church’s ministry. He has served as Guilford’s pastor since June of 2005. Mike has been married to Karen (his college sweetheart!) since 1997. They have four beautiful children, Kendall (2002), Knox (2004), Phineas (2005), and Ebenezer (2008).

In his free time, Mike loves to spend time with his family, reading all kinds of books, and daydreaming about the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Eagles. You can read a few of Mike’s articles at 9marks.org and christianity.com.

Elders and Deacons

The elders of Guilford Baptist Church seek to provide care for the community of believers according to Scriptural mandate. Each of these men believes he is called by God to lead in this local church and is committed to the sound teaching of God’s word.

Deacons are to care for the physical needs of the church.  They serve the church as a whole by helping with the responsibilities that the main teachers could not perform. Each oversees a particular church ministry.
